AppData

2 min read•Verified for Windows 10 & 11

Understand what is inside C:\Users\<Username>\AppData, why it grows continuously, and how to safely reclaim space from it.

Anatomy of the AppData Folder

The AppData directory consists of three primary subfolders:

text
AppData
├── Local ──> Machine-specific caches, temporary data, Chromium/Electron GPU caches
├── LocalLow ──> Low-integrity app data (Java sandbox, browser plugins)
└── Roaming ──> User configurations, profiles, and data synced across domain accounts

Why AppData Consumes 20 GB to 100 GB+

Modern desktop applications (Slack, Discord, Spotify, VS Code, Google Chrome, Epic Games, Steam) place substantial data inside AppData\Local:

  1. GPU Shader & Code Caches: AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache
  2. Orphaned Uninstalled App Remains: When you uninstall an application via Windows, its AppData folder is often left intact.
  3. Spotify Offline Storage: Offline songs and media caches.
  4. Discord Media & Voice Caches: Image and audio fragments cached in AppData\Roaming\discord\Cache.

How ClearKun Cleans AppData Safely

Warning

[!WARNING] Never delete the entire AppData folder! Doing so will wipe your application configurations, browser profiles, and saved passwords.

ClearKun parses AppData surgically:

  • It isolates known cache folders (e.g., Cache, GPUCache, Code Cache, Crashpad, Logs) from important configuration and profile files (User Data, Preferences, Cookies).
  • It enables you to clean cache directories with a single click while preserving your logins and saved settings.
