Troubleshooting

Scan Problems

2 min read•Verified for Windows 10 & 11

How to resolve drive scan freezes, "Access Denied" errors, and slow indexing performance.

Issue 1: Scan Freezes or Gets Stuck on a Specific Folder

Causes

  • A folder containing millions of deeply nested small files (e.g., legacy node_modules or web scraping caches).
  • Bad sectors or I/O timeouts on failing mechanical hard drives (HDDs).
  • Encrypted or cloud-synced folders (OneDrive / Google Drive placeholder stubs).

Solutions

  1. Exclude Problem Paths: In Settings > Scanning, add problematic directory paths to the Scan Ignore List.
  2. Check Drive Health (S.M.A.R.T.): Run chkdsk C: /f in an elevated Command Prompt to verify file system integrity.
  3. OneDrive Files On-Demand: Verify your OneDrive folders are set to download on demand so ClearKun does not trigger network hydration.

Issue 2: Access Denied on System Volume Information

Cause

Windows restricts access to system restore points and volume shadow copy metadata even from Administrator users by default.

Solution

This is expected Windows security behavior. ClearKun safely logs the total allocated volume overhead without attempting to modify restricted security descriptors.

Issue 3: Slow Scanning Speed on Mechanical HDDs

Cause

Mechanical hard drives (5400 RPM / 7200 RPM) have high seek latency compared to solid-state drives (SSDs).

Solution

  1. In ClearKun Settings > Scanning, reduce the traversal thread count from Auto to Single Threaded to prevent HDD read head thrashing.
  2. Defragment your HDD using the native Windows Defragment and Optimize Drives utility.
