Cleaning
Temporary Files
2 min read•Verified for Windows 10 & 11
Learn how temporary files accumulate, where they hide, and how to purge them efficiently.
What Are Temporary Files?
Temporary files are short-lived files generated by the Windows operating system and third-party software during tasks such as:
- Extracting
.zipor installer files - Streaming media or downloading software updates
- Storing unsaved auto-recovery buffers in office and editing tools
- Holding application crash logs and dump records
When applications close normally, they are expected to delete their own temporary files. However, crashes, abrupt shutdowns, and poor application design often leave gigabytes of orphaned data behind.
Major Temp Locations in Windows
1. User Temp Directory (%TEMP%)
- Path:
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp - Typical Size: 2 GB to 20 GB
- Safety: 100% Safe to clean files older than 24 hours.
2. Windows System Temp Directory
- Path:
C:\Windows\Temp - Typical Size: 1 GB to 5 GB
- Safety: Safe to clean. Requires Administrator privileges to purge locked service logs.
