Understanding Storage
Learn how Windows organizes, allocates, and reports disk usage, and why storage numbers often seem contradictory.
The Difference Between "Size" and "Size on Disk"
When you inspect a file or folder in Windows Explorer, you will often notice two numbers: Size and Size on Disk.
- Size (Logical Size): The actual number of bytes contained in the file.
- Size on Disk (Physical Allocation): The amount of disk space occupied on your drive based on the file system's cluster size (typically 4 KB per cluster on NTFS).
If you have 10,000 tiny files (e.g., in a development directory or cache), each taking 500 bytes, Windows must allocate an entire 4 KB block for each file. As a result, 5 MB of data can consume over 40 MB of physical disk storage.
Where Storage Disappears
Windows disk space is commonly occupied by four major categories:
text┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ Personal Files (Videos, Photos, Documents, Downloads) │ ├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Application Caches & Settings (%APPDATA%, Temp, Logs) │ ├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Developer Artifacts (node_modules, Docker, venv, caches) │ ├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ Windows System Reserves (WinSxS, System Restore, Pagefile) │ └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
1. The Hidden %APPDATA% Growth
The C:\Users\<Username>\AppData folder is hidden by default in Windows. Over time, web browsers, Discord, Spotify, Adobe Creative Cloud, and game launchers accumulate gigabytes of unmanaged cache, offline database snapshots, and leftover installation packages in AppData\Local and AppData\Roaming.
2. Windows Update & WinSxS
The C:\Windows\WinSxS (Windows Component Store) preserves previous versions of Windows system components to ensure update rollbacks and system repairs remain possible. While critical, obsolete update leftovers can occupy 10 GB to 25 GB.
3. System Restore & Shadow Copies
Windows automatically creates Volume Shadow Copies before major updates or driver installations. If unmonitored, System Protection can reserve up to 10%–15% of your total drive capacity.
